Punjab Vigilance arrests govt clerk for keeping bribe money received by tainted revenue officer

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau Tuesday nabbed a government clerk in connection with his alleged involvement in a bribery case linked to revenue officer Vijaypal Singh who was arrested in Ludhiana a few days ago, officials said.

The police have identified the clerk as Rohit Sharma alias Rohit Kumar, posted at the Sub-Divisional Magistrate office in Malerkotla, who had kept the safe custody of the bribe money accepted by Singh.

The Vigilance had arrested Singh for accepting the bribe of Rs 5 lakh in two instalments from complainant Karamjit Singh, a resident of Bhaini Kalan village, in lieu of getting his family property share and providing compensation of the land acquired for a road.

Divulging more details, a Vigilance spokesperson said that the anti-corruption agency has found the involvement of clerk Rohit Sharma, who is posted as a reader with SDM Malerkotla, for receiving the amount from accused Singh for its safekeeping.

He said that the accused clerk has been arrested and further investigations are on.

Meanwhile, a case has already been registered under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act at Police Station Economic Offences Wing, Vigilance Bureau, Ludhiana.
