Soon after the Gujarat High Court dismissed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s plea seeking a stay on his conviction in the criminal defamation case over his “Modi surname” remark, the party said on Friday that the judgement has only “redoubled” its resolve to pursue the case and that it will challenge the order in the Supreme Court.
“There is one more option before us… the Supreme Court. Let’s see. The Congress party will seek that option too,” AICC general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal said while addressing a party programme organised in Kozhikode, Kerala.
“We will study the Gujarat HC verdict on Shri Rahul Gandhi ji’s conviction and explore all available legal options. Rahul ji is a fierce voice that takes the Modi government head-on. No force can silence him, the truth will triumph and justice will ultimately prevail. Every patriotic Indian is in support of Rahul ji in this fight,” Venugopal wrote on Twitter.

Rahul’s sister and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra shared a poem in Hindi on Twitter and wrote, “The arrogant regime is trying every trick to suppress the truth, it is adopting all the means, price, punishment, discrimination, deceit, hypocrisy to distract from the questions related to the interests of the public.”
“He (Rahul Gandhi) is ready to pay any cost and despite all the attacks and tactics of the arrogant BJP government, like a true patriot, he has not shied away from raising questions related to the public,” she added.
“समर शेष है, जनगंगा को खुल कर लहराने दो
शिखरों को डूबने और मुकुटों को बह जाने दो

Labelling the court’s ruling as a “travesty of justice,” Congress leader Randeep Surjewala stated, “Instead of punishing ‘Bank Fraudsters’ like Nirav Modi, Ami Modi, Neeshal Modi, Mehul Choksi and ilk, the ‘messenger’ exposing the deceit and swindling of public money is being punished.”

Rajasthan Congress workers sported a black band and conducted a protest march in Jaipur to register their protest against the verdict.
“The entire country, all the Opposition parties, and the people stand with Rahul Gandhi. He is a great leader who has been fighting across the country to unite it,” Karnataka Congress leader DK Shivakumar told reporters.
Meanwhile, the BJP said that Rahul Gandhi has a chronic habit of abusing and defaming eminent leaders. “We would like to ask Congress party, why can’t you control Rahul Gandhi? Why can’t you train him to speak properly? He is your leader. Had he apologised in this matter, it would have ended,” BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad said at a press conference.
The Gujarat High Court today dismissed Rahul’s plea seeking a stay on his conviction in the case where he has been sentenced to two years imprisonment. The high court upheld the earlier sessions court order refusing to grant a stay on his conviction, describing it as “just and legal.”
The court also observed that Gandhi is facing nearly 10 criminal cases, including a criminal defamation case by VD Savarkar’s grandson.
A metropolitan magistrate’s court in Surat on March 23 sentenced Gandhi to two years in jail after convicting him under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 499 and 500 (criminal defamation) in the 2019 case filed by BJP Gujarat MLA Purnesh Modi. This had come after Gandhi allegedly remarked, “Why do all thieves share the Modi surname,” during a political campaign at Kolar in Karnataka in April 2019.
