Three days after a 13-year-old girl was found dead on the premises of an abandoned factory in the city, the Rajkot city police Sunday said the girl was raped and then murdered by a pickpocket who was known to the victim’s family. Police said the pickpocket has been arrested.

The teenager had gone missing Wednesday evening after which her mother had filed a complaint the following evening. On the basis of the complaint, the police had filed a case of kidnapping. However, the girl was found dead inside the compound of an abandoned factory near her home in the eastern part of Rajkot Thursday evening. “Given the state in which we had found the victim’s body, we suspected something untoward had happened… the post-mortem confirmed that she was raped,” Parthrajsinh Gohil, deputy commissioner of police, Rajkot Crime Branch, said Sunday.

Rajkot city police commissioner Raju Bhargav had formed a special investigation team to probe the case. Gohil said that based on human intelligence, they managed to nab Jaydeep alias Jayu Parmar (21), a pickpocket from Surendranagar district, who has been living on footpaths of Rajkot.

Gohil said that Parmar, who had four cases of theft registered against him in Rajkot city last year after he pickpocketed passengers in auto rickshaws, had become friends with the victim’s paternal uncle and had been visiting his home. On Wednesday, the DCP said, Parmar took note of the girl leaving her home to collect firewood as was her routine and followed her. Once she was inside the factory, the accused took the girl inside a room in the factory and raped her.

“Investigation and interrogation so far has revealed that after the rape, the girl told Parmar that she would tell her family about it. The accused got worried and in order to prevent her from informing her family, he killed her,” Gohil said, adding Parmar hit the girl with a blunt object that was lying on the factory premises.

The police said that after murdering the 13-year-old, Parmar pretended to know nothing about the incident and joined the victim’s family members in their search for her. He also accompanied them to a police station to lodge a complaint of kidnapping. However, once police registered a case, Parmar feared he would be caught and then fled to Gondal town. “However, our officers disguised themselves as an auto-rickshaw driver and passengers after getting information that he was hiding near the Gondal Chowkadi and eventually nabbed him,” Gohil told The Indian Express.
