A 29-year-old engineer has been arrested by Mumbai police for allegedly stalking and raping a 17-year-old girl in Malabar Hills. Police said the incident took place on June 24 but was reported on Saturday, July 1, after the victim complained of severe pain in her private parts and other injuries.

According to police officials, the girl and the accused did not know each other till June 23, when the two met on the Marine Drive Promenade in the wee hours on June 24. An officer said, “The family stays in Mumbai’s central suburbs. On June 23, the mother of the 17-year-old scolded her for colouring and straightening her hair due to which she left the house in anger at 10 pm.”

When the victim did not answer the calls, they inquired about her from her friends, and pleaded with them to find her. “When the family could not locate her, they reported the matter at a local police station, whereupon they got a call from their daughter’s friend who said she had been found at Marine Drive and they would bring her home.”

On June 25, the victim’s mother found her crying at home, the police said. “She was not eating or talking to anyone. She lay on her bed traumatised. Her mother then noticed bruises on her lips,” an investigator said. On June 29, her mother found her crying again, the police said, and upon a little coaxing, she told her mother about intense pain in her private parts. Narrating her ordeal, the girl revealed that when she was at the promenade on June 23, a stranger saw her crying and “managed to win her confidence. But right then, her friends managed to locate her and took her home,” said an investigator.

On June 24, as per her statement, the accused allegedly called her to meet her. He took her to his Malabar Hill home under a false pretext where he forced himself on her. Police said the accused allegedly made a video of the act, about which he told her on June 25. “He allegedly raped the girl multiple times in the following days. She said nothing out of fear of her videos being shared online,” an officer said. When the accused kept calling her, she blocked his phone number on June 28.

The matter was reported at Malabar Hill police station on Saturday and a case was registered under relevant sections of rape, kidnapping and stalking under the Indian Penal Code and IT Act. Senior police inspector Udaysingh Shingade said the accused was arrested and they are investigating the matter.
