At least a dozen road stretches in Chandigarh were blocked for motorists after roads caved in at eight locations and underpasses submerged amid heavy rain in the last 48 hours.

A small portion of roads caved in at the dividing roads of Sector 31/47, Sector 14/15, Sector 51 road, the link road between the Industrial Area and village Makhanmajra, the t-point of Sector 20C fuel station. Meanwhile, the weather department sounded an orange alert, forecasting moderate to intense rainfall for the next three hours in the tricity on Monday.

The cave-ins prompted the UT police to install barricades at both sides of the affected stretch to bar commuters from crossing these points. Underpasses situated over the Sukhna lake —the floodgates of which were opened — were waterlogged. These included Kishangarh underpass; Shastri Nagar underpass, Phase-1, Industrial Area; and Makhanmajra underpass.

A police officer said, “The water pump deployed to drain the waterlogged under Section 15/11 underpass gave in on Sunday evening. The pump is yet to be replaced.”

Meanwhile, the UT engineering department has decided to extend the already-opened face of one of the flood gates of the Sukhna lake after a rise in water level Monday morning. An alert was sounded to people near the Sukhna lake not to go near it for the next 36 hours.

A weather department official said, “The intensity of rain will decrease from Monday night onwards, although the rain will continue for the next couple of days. So far, 389.9 mm of rainfall has been received in Chandigarh since July 1 to till date. 95.9 mm rainfall was received in the last 24 hours, between 8.30 am Sunday to 8.30 am Monday.”
