Karan Johar has debuted the first of at least half-a-dozen original songs from his upcoming film, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh. The film is a tribute to the lavish romantic dramas of Yash Chopra, which featured memorable musical sequences shot on-location. The new song is titled “Tum Kya Mile” and is performed by Shreya Ghoshal and Arijit Singh; the latter has been making headlines this week for his poorly received cover version of Pakistani hit “Pasoori” for the upcoming film Satyaprem Ki Katha.
“Tum Kya Mile” has been composed by Pritam and choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant. The lyrics for the track have been penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya. Filmed on location in Kashmir, the track is a throwback to the days of chiffon sarees and smashing overcoats. Both Alia and Ranveer have multiple costume changes in the sequence, as they sing about their love for each other on snowclad peaks and pristine white pastures.

A recently released teaser gave a glimpse of the lavish world that Karan has created for the movie, which will feature high family drama, energetic musical numbers, and performance turned up to 11.
Karan, in an interview with journalist Anupama Chopra on her All About Movies podcast, revealed that he is going old-school with Rocky Aur Rani, which will feature several songs shot in lip-sync — a style believed to have gone out of vogue in Bollywood. But Karan has always been associated with quintessential mainstream Bollywood filmmaking, thanks to hits such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and this marks a return to roots for him, in addition to his grand comeback to feature filmmaking. Karan has only directed two short films since 2016, for Netflix’s Lust Stories and Ghost Stories anthologies.
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani also stars veteran stars Jaya Bachchan, Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi and others. The film will be released in theatres on July 28.
