Rosatom, the renowned Russian nuclear energy corporation, has achieved a significant milestone by shipping a critical component for the fifth unit of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in India. The delivery was made from the production site of the Atommash Branch, AEM-Technologies, JSC in Volgodonsk, which is a part of Rosatom’s machine-building division called Atomenergomash.

The shipped component comprises thrust and supporting rings, which play a vital role in the construction of the fifth power unit at the Kudankulam NPP. These machined rings, equipped with slots, are specifically designed to secure the nuclear reactor in the central part and provide protection against vertical, horizontal dynamic loads, and seismic impact. Each individual item weighs approximately 20 tons and boasts a diameter of more than 5 meters. Notably, this marked the first time that two items were transported simultaneously using motor vehicle transport.

The journey of the equipment begins with its delivery to the port of St. Petersburg, from where it will be transported via water to India. The reactor, classified as an item of the first safety class, assumes the form of a vertical cylindrical vessel with an elliptical bottom. Inside the reactor, a core and internals are housed. The vessel is hermetically sealed by a cover, which is equipped with mechanisms, control and protection units, and outlets for in-core monitoring sensor cables.

The Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, situated in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, is a notable nuclear power project equipped with VVER-1000 power units. The construction of the Kudankulam NPP encompasses the establishment of six power units featuring VVER-1000 reactors, with a combined installed capacity of 6,000 MW. The first two power units were integrated into India’s national power grid in 2013 and 2016, respectively. Currently, work is underway to construct an additional four power units, representing the second and third stages of the Kudankulam NPP.

The shipment of the thrust and supporting rings signifies the continued progress and commitment to the development of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant.
