Sassoon General Hospital in Pune became the first government hospital in the state to introduce Code Blue – a unique system where an expert team respond to an emergency, mainly a patient with an unexpected cardiac arrest, within two minutes.

The system was officially inaugurated by Dean of the hospital Dr Sanjiv Thakur at a function on Friday.

“Code Blue activates the emergency management system and the expert team reaches the patient within two minutes and helps save his/her life,” Dr Thakur said.

“This is the first time a government hospital in the state has introduced this system with limited manpower,” Dr Thakur said adding they hope that this system will lead to decline in the mortality rate of the hospital due to incidents of sudden cardio respiratory arrests.

The Code Blue system will deal with sudden emergencies at the 1,296-bed hospital that has an estimated daily inflow of about 2,500-3,000 patients treated at the out patient department. A mock drill was conducted at the hospital a fortnight ago before the system was officially launched today.
The “Code Blue” office has been set up at the hi-tech casualty department at Sassoon General Hospital.

Code Blue is initiated by calling the hospital’s telephone operator on number 7 and the location is notified.

Dr Kiran Kumar Jadhav, Chief coordinator, Code Blue, said that after the announcement, the code blue team rushes to the respective ward. “There can be false alarms at times mainly as relatives worry about a patient’s deteriorating condition. However our main focus is to deal with the in-hospital cardiac arrests so that treatment is given in a prompt manner,” he said.
Dr Thakur has also appealed to expert consultants who are not attached to the hospital to offer their services at the government run tertiary care facility.
