The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) launched the self-baggage drop facility Monday, reducing wait time for passengers by 15 to 20 minutes.

Fourteen self-baggage drop machines – including 12 fully automated and two hybrids – have been installed at Check-In Row P of Delhi IGI Airport’s Terminal 3. They have the capacity to cater to three passengers per minute.

In a statement, DIAL explained that the facility will generate boarding passes and baggage tags at the Self Check-in Kiosk, after which passengers can scan their boarding passes at the baggage drop and load their luggage on the belt.

Passengers will first have to declare that their luggage does not contain prohibited items. If the baggage exceeds the weight limit, it will be rejected by the machine and the passenger will be provided assistance from the airline’s staff present at the drop facility.

So far, passengers travelling by Indigo have been able to use the facility. However, five other airlines including, Air India, Vistara, Air France, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, and British Airways, are likely to allow their passengers to use the self-baggage drop facility in the near future. DIAL plans on introducing the facility for international passengers as well after clearing mandatory approvals, said an official.
