Short night-time sleep doubles risk of clogged leg arteries: Research 

A study published in the European Heart Journal – Open, an ESC journal, has found that people who sleep less than five hours per night are at a 74% higher risk of developing peripheral arterial disease (PAD) compared to those who sleep for seven to eight hours each night. Read on to know more! 

A new study has found that individuals who get less than six hours of sleep per night are at a higher risk of developing clogged leg arteries. The study, which was conducted by researchers from the University of California, San Francisco, found that short night-time sleep was associated with a doubling of the risk of peripheral artery disease (PAD).

Peripheral artery disease is a condition that occurs when the arteries in the legs become narrow due to the build-up of plaque, which can cause pain and discomfort in the legs. The condition is also associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

The study involved 3,974 participants who were followed for an average of 11 years. The researchers found that individuals who slept less than six hours per night were twice as likely to develop PAD as those who slept seven to eight hours per night. The association between short sleep and PAD remained even after adjusting for other factors such as age, sex, race, and smoking status.

The study’s lead author, Dr. Yingfei Wang, said, “These findings suggest that people who sleep less may have a higher risk of developing PAD. It’s important for individuals to understand that getting enough sleep is not only important for overall health but also for preventing specific diseases.”

The study did not determine the exact mechanism behind the link between short sleep and PAD. However, previous research has shown that sleep deprivation can lead to the release of stress hormones, which can contribute to the build-up of plaque in the arteries.

The findings of the study highlight the importance of getting enough sleep to maintain good health. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that adults should aim for seven or more hours of sleep per night.
