The Vadodara police Saturday began a probe into the death of a couple whose bodies were found inside their sixth floor apartment at a residential colony in the Gotri area of the city late night on Friday.
According to police, Ashish Mane allegedly killed his wife Aarti before hanging himself. The couple is survived by their two-and-half-year-old son who has been handed over to Ashish’s family. Both the bodies were sent for a panel post-mortem at SSG hospital Saturday.
The Gotri police, which is investigating the case, said that the initial post-mortem report has concluded that Aarti died of asphyxia and had “visible marks” of strangulation by hand.
Police said the incident occurred after 6 pm when Ashish, who worked as an executive with a bank in the city, returned home from work. The Gotri police received a call from the police control room, where the couple’s neighbours had called for help late Friday evening. Inspector MK Gurjar of Gotri police station said, “The couple’s toddler son was habituated to visiting the neighbour’s home every evening. As usual, he went out of the door that was unlatched and spent time with his neighbhours. When they entered the flat to hand over the child to his mother, they discovered Ashish hanging and Aarti’s lifeless body. The neighbours immediately called the police.” No note has been recovered from the flat.
According to the account of the neighbours, the couple was facing a marital discord due to Ashish’s suspicious nature. “The neighbours have told us that the couple had frequent fights as Ashish used to suspect Aarti of being disloyal. He used to lock his wife and the child at home and go to work and only open the door when he returned home. There was no indication of a fight Friday evening, according to the close neighbours. However, we are yet to record statements of the families of the two,” Gurjar said.
Police have registered a case of accidental death and will file an offence of murder against Ashish, Gurjar said.
