In a significant development, Tata Projects has emerged victorious in securing the contract for the construction of Micron Technology’s advanced semiconductor assembly and test plant, set to be located in Sanand, Gujarat. The project, situated within the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation area of Chaarodi, Sanand, will occupy an expansive 93 acres of land. Phase 1 of the construction will encompass the establishment of a 500,000 square feet cleanroom facility, with plans for it to be operational by late 2024. Micron’s ambitious project aims to establish India’s inaugural semiconductor unit with a total investment of $2.75 billion, with $825 million (approximately ₹6,760 crore) contributed by Micron, and the remainder allocated in two phases by the government.
This venture entails the design and construction of a groundbreaking DRAM (Dynamic Random-Access Memory) and NAND (Negative-AND) assembly and test facility – the first of its kind in India. DRAM memory is used for storing code related to algorithms and processes, while NAND memory serves as storage for data such as pictures and music.
In addition to its pioneering technological advancements, the Sanand Factory is designed to meet LEED Gold Standards, a recognition bestowed by the Green Building Council. Furthermore, the facility will incorporate cutting-edge water-saving technologies, enabling the implementation of a Zero Liquid Discharge system. This reflects Tata Projects’ steadfast commitment to sustainable and responsible construction practices.
Vinayak Pai, Managing Director & CEO of Tata Projects, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “We are thrilled to embark on this significant journey with Micron Technology, an industry leader in innovative memory and storage solutions. This collaboration exemplifies the unwavering commitment of Tata Projects to advancing technology, promoting sustainable development, and contributing considerably to the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Through this classic venture, we are not just building a state-of-the-art semiconductor assembly and test plant; we are laying the foundation for India’s technological prowess on the global stage.”
Micron Technology’s Senior Vice President of Global Assembly and Test Operations, Gursharan Singh, conveyed the company’s excitement regarding the project, remarking, “We’re excited to break ground on Micron’s new assembly and test facility here in GIDC, Sanand, Ahmedabad, India, and lead this transformation in India’s semiconductor industry.” Singh went on to elaborate on the choice of Tata Projects for the construction, citing their impressive track record in delivering high-quality projects within specified timelines, budgets, and with an unwavering commitment to safety and ethical standards.
This momentous collaboration between Tata Projects and Micron Technology not only heralds a new era for India’s semiconductor industry but also underscores the nation’s growing prominence in the global technology landscape. The construction of this state-of-the-art facility not only signifies a significant economic boost but also a commitment to sustainable development and the ‘Make in India’ initiative, reflecting the companies’ dedication to advancing technological frontiers on both domestic and international fronts. As the project advances, it is anticipated to make a profound impact on India’s technological prowess and bolster its position in the global semiconductor arena.
