Having been the only goal scorer for Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final apart from his skipper, Angel Di Maria terms playing alongside Lionel Messi as the greatest takeaway from his football career.
“The best thing that happened in my career is that I played with Leo Messi in the national team and club,” Di Maria told TV Publica Argentina. “I participated with him for a year in the club and did not play. I knew that if he came I would not play much. I told my wife and Paredes that I would not play anymore, but to be with him for a year and train with him for a year and see him every day is the best thing that will happen to me. I think this is the most important thing.”
Di Maria, who missed out on featuring in the 2014 World Cup Final for La Albiceleste, was also their sole goalscorer in the 2021 Copa America win against Brazil and also managed to find the back of the net during the 3-0 Finalissima win against Italy at the Wembley Stadium last year.
The left footed former Real Madrid winger was -alongside Messi- also part of the Argentina squad that won gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
“I broke everything to be in the National Team. The property of the National Team for me is the garden of my house,” Di Maria said. “I wanted a stadium to applaud me in Argentina. I turned the tables, today everything changed. It makes me happy that people are happy. We brought great joy to the country and I’ll stay with that.”
In his 132 appearances for Argentina senior national team, Di Maria has scored 29 goals and registered 27 assists.
