The decision comes weeks after the Supreme Court declined relief to Rapido, which challenged the Bombay High Court’s order directing the firm to stop operation in Maharashtra immediately, as it does not have a license to operate bike, taxi, or rickshaw services.

The transport department of the Delhi government cited the violation of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, as the reason for the crackdown on bike taxi services. The Act stipulates that commercial two-wheelers are not permitted to be used for carrying passengers. The violation of this rule attracts a fine of Rs. 5,000 for the first-time offense and Rs. 10,000 for subsequent violations.

Bike taxi services such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido have been asked to stop plying their bike taxis in the city immediately. This move has come as a shock to many users who have been dependent on these services for their daily commute. Bike taxis had gained immense popularity in Delhi due to their affordability, especially for short distances.

While the government’s decision to crack down on bike taxis may have been made in the interest of public safety, it has left many questioning the effectiveness of the move. Bike taxis were seen as a viable alternative to other modes of transportation, particularly in areas with heavy traffic congestion, where four-wheelers and even auto-rickshaws were unable to navigate through.

Bike taxi services have also provided employment opportunities for many individuals who owned a two-wheeler and were looking for ways to earn extra income. With the ban on bike taxis, these individuals are likely to be severely impacted.
