The Dadar police have arrested three persons for allegedly cheating a 74-year-old man under the pretext of exchanging his gold ornaments with a gold biscuit. The police said that the three accused, who originally hails from Latur, would travel to different parts of the state and after targeting a certain number of senior citizens, would escape back to their hometown.

According to the police officials, a recent incident had taken place in Dadar on June 17.
The victim, identified as Govind Agnihotri, had gone to a Seva Mandal in Dadar and while returning at around 2pm, two persons approached him and asked him if he was interested in exchanging his gold ornaments with a gold biscuit.

An investigator said, “In an attempt to win their trust, the three would even demonstrate the process of exchanging gold ornaments in front of the senior citizens as one of the three accused would pose as a pedestrian while the other two would approach him and offer a deal to exchange his gold ornament with a gold biscuit. And looking at that person exchanging, the senior citizen would also fall for the trap.”

Similarly, these three accused won the trust of Agnihotri following which he ended up handing over his five gram gold ring and a gold chain of five grams. The complainant was subsequently given a gold biscuit, said police. However, later when the 74-year-old went to a jeweller and checked the authenticity of the gold biscuit, he came to know that it was a duplicate piece.

“Agnihotri then went home and informed his family members after which they came to the police station in the evening and lodged a complaint,” said an officer.

A case was registered under relevant sections for cheating.

During the course of the investigation, the police officials started checking the CCTV footages after which the three accused were identified as Vitthal Gyanba Jadhav (27), Balasaheb Yuvraj Gaikwad (24) and Dhondiram Kerba Jadhav (31).

“The footage were showed to our informers who identified them and helped us with their addresses,” said an officer.

A team was subsequently sent to Latur and the three were apprehended from their respective houses.

The police said that the three accused are school dropouts and have been committing the crime to source their daily needs. “They were previously arrested by police in Osmanabad and Parbhani. There are a lot of cases registered against the trio as they would only target senior citizens,” said an investigator.
