Tripura Police Friday rescued a contractor just hours after he was kidnapped in broad daylight by a group of miscreants near the North Gate of Palace Compound in Agartala city.

Speaking to reporters late Friday evening, West Tripura Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar said Shyamal Deb, a contractor, was forced into a vehicle at North Gate. “We are taking details of who was behind the kidnapping. We shall arrest them soon. There were some sensitive issues involved and we are investigating,” he said. The contractor has given four to five names of suspects to the police.

Stating that Deb was rescued from Fatikcherra in West Tripura, the SP said teams would be formed and SPs from adjoining districts contacted as part of efforts to arrest the accused.

Deb claimed he was abducted because he recently got contracts for a few works of the Public Works Department (PWD) in Khowai district. Speaking to reporters shortly after he was rescued, the contractor said he had gone to Gorkhabasti in the city for some work and had crossed a traffic point near North Gate when a group of 8-10 people surrounded him and asked him to board their vehicle, leaving his scooty on the street.

“They forced me to board the vehicle and went to Fatikcherra tea garden. They had a surrender letter for me to sign. They snatched my phone and found that the police were calling me. Realising that I was being tracked, they dropped me there and left. I took an autorickshaw till Shalbagan and the police rescued me later,” he said.

Deb said the kidnappers targeted him because the contract of three works, including the maintenance of two buildings and a road work, together added up to Rs 60 lakh. Seeking Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha’s intervention in the matter, he said, “I am a BJP activist and I am inspired by the CM’s ideology. I request the CM to take the initiative to end mafia raj”.

Senior police officials in Tripura have reiterated that they are taking several steps to curb crimes including thefts, assaults and abductions. Recently, the West Tripura SP admitted that theft cases were on the rise and announced a series of measures in this regard.
