The Western Railway (WR) has recently hired a private contractor via auction for installation and operation of water vending machines (WVMs) at 25 stations. These stations include Dahisar, Mira Road, Bhayander, Naigaon, Vasai, NalaSopara, Virar, Boisar, Vaitarna among others.

According to a WR official, it is the first ever contract for installation and operation of WVM awarded in a cluster. “53 WVMs at 25 stations will be installed and operated by M/s Vrindavan Catering Company for a period of five years. With this, the long pending demand of provision of healthy, dispensed drinking water at cheap rates to passengers at railway stations will be possible,” said the official.

Passengers can buy drinking water for Rs 5 (refill) and Rs 8 (with botte) per litre.

Since the contractor has been hired via the auction process, the WR will earn a total revenue of Rs 1.62 crore for five years, with annual revenue amounting to Rs 32.56 lakh. The contractor is required to install the machines within two months at the given stations.
