Four persons were reportedly injured with gunshot wounds after CPI(M) and ruling TMC supporters clashed in Domkal area of Murshidabad district on Monday.
While CPI(M) alleged that their procession was attacked by supporters of the ruling party, the TMC claimed that they were provoked and three of their party workers were injured by gunshots. The CPI(M), on the other hand, claimed that one of their supporters was injured in the “firing”.
Elsewhere, family members of BJP MLA Mukutmani Adhikari were attacked allegedly by ruling Trinamool Congress workers in the Krishnaganj area of Ranaghat in Nadia district on Sunday night following a clash.
According to police sources, a crude bomb was hurled near the MLA’s house on Sunday around 10.30 pm, leading to a clash between BJP and TMC supporters in the area.
“While trying to stop the incident, Adhikari’s father, mother and brother were injured. All the three injured family members have been admitted to a hospital and their condition is stable,” said a local police officer.
The Ranaghat MLA alleged that some Trinamool Congress-backed miscreants attacked BJP workers and supporters in the area. “When my father went to stop the trouble, he was also attacked. My brother and mother were also attacked,” Adhikari said.
Police said they have arrested two persons in connection with the incident. “We have received two cross complaints and two persons have been arrested. The investigation is on,” said a senior police officer.
As per police sources, one TMC and one BJP supporter have been arrested. A huge police picket has also been set up in the area.
“The BJP is unnecessarily trying to politicise a minor incident. There is no political link to the incident,” TMC’s Ranaghat-II Block unit president Rajesh Bhowmik said.
Cong candidates moves HC for security: ‘Not being allowed to campaign’
Meanwhile, 17 Congress candidates from Malda approached the Calcutta High Court seeking security. The candidates alleged that they are being threatened due to which they are not able to campaign for the panchayat polls.
Among those who have sought security are 15 gram panchayat candidates from Malda’s Manikchak block and two panchayat samiti candidates. The petition will likely be heard on Tuesday.
Ever since the announcement of the panchayat election date, there have been reports of unrest from various parts of the state. Areas like Bhangar, and Canning have reported several incidents of violence. At least nine people have died in different incidents of violence since June 9.
