OVER a month after a 70-year-old man died by suicide while his wife and son were hospitalised after a suicide attempt at their house in Pune’s Fursungi, the mother-son duo were found dead at their residence on Monday afternoon.

Police suspect they attempted suicide again by consuming some poisonous substance.

On May 22, Suryaprakash Harishchandra Abnave (70) who used to work at a photo studio was found dead. His wife Janabai, a 65-year-old homemaker and 41-year-old son Chetan, who was unemployed, had been hospitalised.

The probe at the time had revealed that the family had taken the extreme step by consuming poisonous substance due to financial, personal and health issues they were grappling with.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Vikrant Deshmukh said, “The mother and son were found dead at their house around Monday noon. Initial probe points to consumption of poisonous substance. We have launched a probe into the sequence of events, leading to their deaths.”

Preliminary probe in May had suggested Janabai was battling cancer and Chetan was under stress due to his divorce and loss of employment.

“After their suspected suicide attempt in May, the mother and son had been hospitalised and were later released. The two seem to have taken the extreme step some time before their death came to light on Monday noon,” said senior inspector Arvind Gokule, in-charge of Hadapsar police station.
