Amidst the dynamic and ever-shifting political landscape in Maharashtra, the much-awaited civic polls appear to be on uncertain ground for this year, as stated by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Raj Thackeray on Monday.
Mr. Thackeray voiced skepticism about the feasibility of conducting civic polls in the current political climate, alluding to the intricate twists and turns that have characterized the state’s political scenario. Casting doubt on the likelihood of the polls taking place this year, he remarked, “Considering the present state of affairs, I have my doubts about the civic polls occurring in the near future. If they do proceed, it’s likely that many will face disappointment. I am inclined to believe that we will be heading straight into the Lok Sabha elections next year.” His remarks were underlined by his critique of the changing alliances and political dynamics within the state over the past year.
For more than eighteen months, the civic elections for significant and financially significant bodies such as Mumbai, Pune, and Pimpri-Chinchwad have remained pending, raising questions about the political course ahead.
In a bid to rejuvenate his party’s standing within the state, Raj Thackeray held a crucial meeting with his party officials in Mumbai. He revealed his plans to establish teams that would comprehensively assess the party’s strength across the 48 Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra.
Asserting his party’s independence, Raj Thackeray distanced himself from potential collaborations with either the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) or the opposition INDIA coalition. He emphasized that his primary focus remained his party’s interests and that MNS members were actively preparing for the upcoming elections.
Regarding the ongoing turmoil within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Thackeray reiterated his belief that the unfolding crisis was a premeditated spectacle. He alleged that the NCP had maintained covert ties with the BJP since 2014. In his perspective, the prevailing confusion extended even to the media landscape, and he predicted the eventual alignment of the second NCP faction led by Sharad Pawar with the BJP.
Despite the political nuances, Raj Thackeray, who holds ties with the ruling BJP albeit with some distance due to his estranged cousin Uddhav Thackeray’s leadership, hinted at the possibility of MNS going solo in the upcoming elections. In the past year, the MNS has leaned towards the BJP, sparking speculations about a potential alliance between the two parties.
