Anurag Kashyap has been a vocal supporter of South Indian cinema, especially the ones made by Tamil directors Sasikumar, Bala and Ameer. He paid tribute to the trio in the film Gangs of Wasseypur. Time and again, Kashyap has said that Gangs of Wasseypur was inspired by Subramaniapuram, which was the debut film of Sasikumar. The movie turned 15 today, and the Kennedy director took to Twitter to pay tribute to the film.
Sharing the poster of Subramaniapuram, Anurag wrote, “15 years to the film that inspired me so much that it led us to make Gangs of Wasseypur. Congratulations Sasi Kumar and team.”

Meanwhile, Sasikumar and Samuthirakani released a video thanking people for making Subramaniapuram a classic. Sasikumar said, “It feels like yesterday, but it has been 15 years since Subramaniapuram was released. When the film came out, people celebrated the film carrying it not on their shoulders but on their heads. I would never forget the support I received for the film. I am here because of the film and the support I received from all. I thank everyone for that.”
Samuthirkani said, “Days are rolling out fast. It’s been already 15 years. Subramaniapuram… the film that made me an actor, the film that made Sasikumar an actor. It gave the address to many actors and crew members of the film. After all these years, the film still stands tall without losing a small drop of its intensity. Sasi is currently getting ready for another film, which will be better than Subramaniapuram.”
Subramaniapuram is an action drama about a gang of friends from a rural area of Madurai. For friendship and love, the gang end up becoming hitmen. It is a heartbreaking story of love and betrayal that stunned the audience. Set in the 80s, the movie continues to be one of the well-made period films in Tamil cinema.
