New Delhi, July 27, 2023: India’s emergence as the world’s third-largest economy is ‘guaranteed,’ according to Congress leader Jairam Ramesh. He made this assertion in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent statement that during his third term as PM (2024-2029), India will ascend to the third-largest economy from its current fifth spot.
Jairam Ramesh took to Twitter to express his thoughts, stating, “Typical of Mr. Modi to give his personal guarantee on an arithmetical inevitability. India’s emergence as the world’s 3rd largest economy in this decade has been predicted for quite some time now, and it’s guaranteed – whichever dispensation forms the next government.”
Ramesh further emphasized that if the 26-party opposition bloc (INDIA) comes to power, there will be a ‘key difference’ in growth compared to the path the country will take under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government. He highlighted the INDIA parties’ commitment to growth that is socially inclusive, creates jobs, raises incomes across the board, and is ecologically sustainable.
The Congress and 25 other opposition parties have united to form the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) to challenge the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and prevent the latter from securing a third consecutive term at the Centre.
India’s climb up the global economic ladder has been steady, as it overtook the United Kingdom in September last year to become the world’s fifth-largest economy. The top four spots are currently held by the United States, China, Japan, and Germany, respectively.
Since Modi’s first term in 2014, India’s economic growth has been a key focus of his government, with the Prime Minister and the BJP frequently emphasizing the country’s rise from the tenth-largest economy to its current fifth position.
The upcoming 2024 elections will play a crucial role in determining the nation’s trajectory and how it progresses towards achieving its economic goals. With both the ruling party and the opposition promising growth and development, Indian voters will have an important decision to make in shaping the country’s economic future.
As the countdown to the elections begins, the political landscape in India is likely to witness intense debates and engagements, as each party vies for public support and confidence in their ability to lead the nation towards greater prosperity and progress.
