Responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attack on Opposition parties, including the NCP, in Bhopal on Tuesday, NCP president Sharad Pawar said that such statements by ruling party leaders were being made as they were unable to digest the Opposition parties’ conclave in Patna.
“A large number of Opposition parties came together (in Patna) to discuss the issues facing the country but some people are unable to digest it. It is due to this that they are making statements and there is nothing more to respond to it,” Pawar said after a function of the Poona Merchants Association in the city.
Earlier, Modi, addressing partymen in Bhopal, slammed the Opposition parties. Targeting them days after the Patna conclave, Modi said that the Opposition parties can only “guarantee” corruption, and accused them of being involved in scams worth “at least 20 lakh crore”. He also accused the Opposition parties of being family-run, which only worked to keep their families relevant.
Pawar said that the PM was setting a new example on what should be spoken about his countrymen. “Among those who were present in the meeting in Patna were chief ministers and former chief ministers. The public voted them to power, so how appropriate it was for the PM to make statements against them? He should think about the statements he is making and I don’t want to speak more on this,” Pawar said.
On Modi’s remarks on the Maharashtra Central Cooperative Bank, he said, “I was never a member of the Maharashtra Central Cooperative Bank and I’m not a member now as well. I have never taken any loan or financial help from it. Is it appropriate for him to make allegations on issues related to an institute in which we have never been members? The matter was in court and it is proved that I have no connection with the bank.”
Pawar said Modi named his daughter and NCP MP Supriya Sule but there was no need to do so as most people know that she is not connected to such institutes. On the allegation of corruption in irrigation, the NCP chief said it was completely untrue.
On BRS chief and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s visit to Pandharpur, Pawar said it was fine for anyone to visit the temple in Pandharpur but the “show of strength” was a cause of concern and controversial. “I would have been happy if whatever is happening was held to increase cooperation between the states,” he said.
