As part of the rehabilitation of 23 families residing at the Sabarmati Ashram campus in Ahmedabad for the development of the Gandhi Ashram Memorial and Precinct Development project, the office of Ahmedabad Collector has passed an order to provide a plot of land measuring 3,400 square metres in the Vadaj area to a housing cooperative society formed by the 23 families.

As per the order dated June 5, the 23 families agreed to obtain the option of forming a cooperative society for their habitation. The next step was to give land to the cooperative society. The order notes the families have formed and registered the cooperative society — The Satyagraha Park Cooperative Housing Society Limited — in January with District Registrar, Cooperative Societies (Housing), in Ahmedabad.

Sources said that following the allotment of land to The Satyagraha Park Cooperative Housing Society Limited, the Bhoomuipujan ceremony of the plot for the construction of houses for the 23 families is likely to take place soon.

According to the order, the cooperative society has been provided the land in the Vadaj area, which has been acquired from Shri Sabarmati Ashram Gaushala Trust in lieu of the land given to the latter in Malarpur village of Kheda district. The land parcel of 3,400 square metres has been ordered to be allocated to the cooperative society after getting approval from the Revenue Department under various conditions.

Some conditions under which the land has been given include the use of plots only for residential purpose. The families have to complete construction within three years. They wont get permission to sell it off.

A senior government official who is closely connected with project said, “The allotment of the land parcel has been done to the cooperative society. The approval of the Revenue Department in this regard is merely a formality. After rehabilitation of these 23 families, now only 14 families’ rehabilitation is remaining from the around 290 families living on the ashram campus.” The state government has given various options to the families residing at residential properties at the Sabarmati Ashram campus.

Most residential properties are in possession of descendants of those whom Mahatma Gandhi had settled in the Ashram in the early 1900s. For the implementation of the Gandhi Ashram Memorial and Precinct Development project worth around Rs 1,200 crore, the Gujarat government has formed a governing council and an executive council. The governing council is headed by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.

The project is being jointly implemented by the Centre and state government.
