Suumit Shah: The Dukaan Founder Revolutionizing India’s Small Businesses

Mumbai, India – Suumit Shah, the mastermind behind the groundbreaking Dukaan app, has emerged as a beacon of hope for small and medium-sized retailers across India. As the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns forced countless businesses to shut their doors, Shah’s innovative solution provided a lifeline for struggling entrepreneurs. Today, Suumit Shah is a household name, celebrated as the visionary founder of Dukaan.

Born on December 25, 1990, into a middle-class family in Mumbai, Suumit Shah experienced his fair share of challenges on the path to success. After completing his schooling, he worked in his uncle’s shop in Satara, Maharashtra. Later, he pursued an engineering degree in Sangli and developed a keen interest in digital marketing, web designing, and development through online courses taken alongside his college roommate.

Armed with newfound skills, Suumit embarked on a career journey that included stints at prominent companies such as McDonald’s and Cred. However, his entrepreneurial spirit drove him to establish his own business venture called Risemetric in 2014, alongside his friend and CTO, Subhash Choudhary, a talented techie and college dropout.

The fateful meeting of Suumit and Subhash through Facebook in 2014 laid the foundation for their future endeavors. Subhash, who hails from a small town in Bihar, overcame adversity from an early age, losing his father when he was just three years old. After completing his schooling, he moved to Mumbai in search of employment opportunities, enrolling in a computer hardware and networking course. Subhash’s technological acumen soon caught the attention of an MNC in Mumbai, where he found employment.

Sharing a passion for digital marketing, Suumit and Subhash cultivated their friendship and eventually joined forces to establish a marketing agency called Risemetric. After experiencing success with their agency, they embarked on a new venture, culminating in the launch of the Dukaan app in May 2020. Dukaan quickly gained traction and emerged as a highly successful startup in a remarkably short span of time.

The genesis of the Dukaan app can be traced back to the nationwide lockdown imposed in 2020. As small retailers faced unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Suumit received a text message from a radio jockey announcing the acceptance of orders through WhatsApp. Intrigued by this idea, Suumit and Subhash set out to create a solution. Within 48 hours, they developed the Dukaan app—an Android-based platform that enabled merchants, retailers, and individuals with no programming skills to establish their own eCommerce stores.

Launched in May 2020, the Dukaan app quickly became India’s most popular digital DIY platform. It empowered entrepreneurs to set up their businesses within a mere 30 seconds, providing a much-needed avenue for small and medium-sized retailers to transition from offline to online operations. In a mere 20 days after its launch, Dukaan facilitated the creation of over 150,000 online stores, listing 500,000 products, and processing more than 75,000 orders.

With its O2O (Offline to Online) e-commerce model, the Dukaan app facilitated the survival and growth of nearly two million small and medium-sized businesses across India. Today, the app boasts over two million stores and seven million products across 40 diverse categories, catering to customers in over 400 cities. Dukaan has truly revolutionized the way India’s small businesses operate, embodying the essence of the “Digital India” initiative.

Suumit Shah’s remarkable journey serves as an inspiration to entrepreneurs worldwide.
