The Uttar Pradesh government is taking decisive steps towards achieving its ambitious goal of boosting the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) to one trillion dollars within the next five years. To ensure the state’s progress aligns with the outlined roadmap, the government has established a comprehensive monitoring system encompassing quarterly milestones and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for all sectors and departments.
In pursuit of this milestone, the Uttar Pradesh government entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with a consultant on August 5, 2022, to develop the strategic roadmap for attaining a trillion-dollar economy. The roadmap, submitted by Deloitte India to the state government on January 5, 2023, underwent revisions to incorporate inputs from various stakeholders, leading to the final revised roadmap on May 24, 2023.
As part of the monitoring system, the government is conducting sectoral reviews and holding weekly video conferences with district magistrates and other district-level officers at the chief secretary’s level. This approach allows for a meticulous review of the implementation of the roadmap’s objectives and timely course corrections, if required.
Alok Kumar-III, Secretary of Planning and the nodal officer for the one trillion-dollar economy project, shared insights about the monitoring system and highlighted the significance of identifying KPIs for different departments and sectors. The feedback collected through this system will enable the state government to ascertain whether it is progressing effectively towards its ambitious goal.
To bolster the statistical basis for decision-making, the government intends to conduct 20 surveys and studies to assess the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) and the Gross District Domestic Product (GDDP). Additionally, consumption and supply of construction materials will be studied to facilitate a more realistic assessment of economic growth.
To aid in the execution of the proposed studies, the Giri Institute of Development Studies may be entrusted with some responsibilities. Among the planned surveys are those focused on identifying a comprehensive list of flowers and ornamental/medicinal plants, as well as capturing the production and prices of high-value exotic fruits like dragon fruit, Kiwi, raspberry, and strawberry.
Furthermore, the state government aims to analyze the socio-economic conditions of women and study the increase in income for farmers between 2022-2023 and 2017-2018. These assessments will provide valuable insights into the economic landscape and help steer policy decisions for inclusive growth.
While the trillion-dollar economy objective represents a significant challenge, the Uttar Pradesh government’s proactive approach and meticulous monitoring system demonstrate a strong commitment to achieving this monumental milestone. With continuous evaluations and dedicated efforts, the state is poised to emerge as an economic powerhouse and transform the lives of its citizens.
