‘Why did you come now?’: JJP MLA slapped while inspecting flood-hit village in Kaithal

An  MLA from Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), Ishwar Singh, was slapped by a woman in a village in Kaithal district on Wednesday whie the legislator was out to inspect flood-hit areas.

A purported video clipping of the incident shows a woman slapping the MLA in full public view, while abusing him. “Why did you come now?” says the woman before slapping the MLA. Amid condemnation of the act of the woman by fellow villagers, the security personnel of the MLA is shown to immediately move in to protect the legislator. When asked about the incident, Ishwar Singh told The Indian Express: “She raised her hand on me…It was like an assault. But I have not lodged a complaint as it would not be appropriate on my part.”

According to Ishwar Singh, he had gone to inspect a flood-hit Bhatia village in his constituency Guhla-Cheeka. The area has been inundated by the overflowing Ghaggar river following heavy rains.

Ishwar Singh said, “An embankment was breached because of pressure of water, which led to floods in the village and its fields. What is the fault of an MLA in it?” According to the legislator, the villagers were saying that the embankment should have been built properly.

A former Rajya Sabha MP Ishwar Singh, 75, has also served earlier as chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes.
